Kawandi: Scrappy Hand-sewn Quilting

“Kawandi” is what people of African descent in Western India (Siddis) call their quilts. Kawandi are made from pieces of old cloth cut into small patches and placed on top of an old sari, creating a series of layers in contrasting colors. We'll make our own miniature versions of these using commonly accessible scraps.

Prerequisite: you should be able to sew a running stitch by hand. Comparable crafts include mending, applique, patchwork, and embroidery. Beginners who can make a running stitch are welcome. The $30 fee includes all materials.

Fee: $30
