Coptic stitch is one of the oldest bookbinding techniques around (literally ancient — we're talking early Christian Egypt old), and it's also one of the most satisfying to sew by hand. You stitch your pages straight onto two covers using a linked chain stitch, no glue involved, and the spine stays completely exposed — so every loop and link you sew becomes part of the design. Oh, and the pages lay perfectly flat when open, which regular glued books can only dream of.
This is a great excuse to dig through the scrap bin for cover material — cardboard, chipboard, weird thick paper, anything with character works.
