2026 Scrap Board Recruitment
The Scrap Exchange is entering an exciting new chapter — and we are seeking new members for our Board of Directors.
For 35 years, The Scrap Exchange has promoted creativity, environmental awareness, and community through reuse. Today, our work includes not only our beloved creative reuse retail operations, but also stewardship of the Reuse Arts District — an 8-acre campus that serves as a creative, commercial, and cultural hub in Durham’s Lakewood neighborhood.
This is a big, ambitious mission. And we are looking for thoughtful, committed community members to help guide what comes next.
Board members work alongside the Executive Director and staff leadership to strengthen the organization’s mission, support sound governance, oversee budget development, and help shape a long-term strategic vision for The Scrap Exchange and the Reuse Arts District.
We are especially interested in candidates with experience in:
Real estate and campus development
Arts, creativity, and cultural programming
Reuse, sustainability, recycling, or waste reduction
Finance, accounting, or nonprofit governance
Fundraising, marketing, or communications
Community engagement and neighborhood-based work
Durham’s linguistic, cultural, and community diversity
The Board is seeking to add approximately five to ten new members who can bring fresh perspectives, relevant expertise, and a shared commitment to the future of creative reuse in Durham.
If you are interested in board service, by June 5 please click the button below to provide a brief statement of interest and relevant background or qualifications. Prospective members will be invited to attend the June Board meeting, after which the Board will consider new members in closed session.
There are also many meaningful ways to support The Scrap Exchange without serving as a voting board member. Applicants may also be considered for board committees, including fundraising, marketing, campus development, or project-based volunteer opportunities.
If you care about creativity, sustainability, community, and the future of reuse in Durham, we would love to hear from you.
