Artist-in-Residence:  Bryant Holsenbeck

The Scrap Exchange is pleased to announce that environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck has completed her artist-in-residency program here at The Scrap Exchange and we have unveiled her work!  Holsenbeck designed colorful and interactive art installations throughout the retail space using scrap materials found within the store.

Volunteers and store staff worked closely alongside the artist throughout the process. Installations include wispy walls of rainbow-colored streamers; bobbing bird mobiles suspended from the ceiling; and the main attraction, “Rio de Reuse”! Rio de Reuse is a virtual river that runs through the entire store, complete with fish, tunnels, canyons, and grottoes. Schools of swimming fish provide a whimsical riverbed path on the concrete foor, leading the explorer through the system of tunnels that cut directly through the retail store aisles.

Rio de Reuse symbolizes the core mission of The Scrap Exchange, diverting materials from a solid waste stream that pollutes and chokes the environment, and transforming the materials into a virtual river teeming with creative expression through reuse. Each tunnel is constructed with materials found right within the store, prompting discussion about how materials can be used in a wide variety of applications beyond their original purpose.

Rio de Reuse begins at the front of the retail store, and leads children and visitors though every aisle of reclaimed materials before ending at the Make and Take Room, a place where visitors can participate in an Open Studio experience creating art from barrels of salvaged materials available in the room.

Exploring Rio de Reuse is free and available anytime during retail store hours!

Scrap Exchange Store Video

We recently had the honor and privilege to work with Emmy award-winning storyteller and television personality ~ as well as long-time Scrap supporter and all-around superstar ~ Willa Brigham to produce a series of videos that help explain the mission of The Scrap Exchange, and the programming we offer. We can’t thank Willa enough for her great work, and we invite you to watch this video featuring “The Scrap Exchange Song,” an original piece written and sung by Willa herself.

C’mon now, everyone, sing along!
