Greetings ~
I went to the train station earlier
this week to see off my friend Cookie
Harris, who was heading back home to New York
City. She’d been down for a few
days to visit her momma, who is originally from Durham and now lives in Wake
Forest.
Cookie’s departure from Durham (rather
than Raleigh or Wake Forest) was not random—Cookie
wants to move to Durham, and she wants
her momma back in Durham.
While
we waited for the train, Cookie’s mother, who is 80 now, told me about
the “good
old days” here in Durham, haunting
dance halls with her girlfriends in the Hayti/Fayetteville Street neighborhood, how
she worked for the Durham Housing Authority and NCCU as a switchboard operator
by day and as a singer by night.
It was fascinating
to be a visitor in my own home, as I
listened to Momma Harris talk about her
past experiences and her desire to continue to work and be part of a community.
We talked about what it might be like if
she lived in Durham again, how we could get her into the downtown
neighborhood with the new
Amtrak station opening
next
week, new bus station across
the street, Warehouse
Blues series at West Village and free
music at Brightleaf and American Tobacco through the summer,
the Performing
Arts Center, the Durham Farmers’ Market and Crafters’
Market, Durham
Central Park, great
restaurants and galleries, the Senior Center and public
library, to name just
a few of the resources she could tap into.
I saw the same
spark in her eyes as
when she talked about the good old days in Durham. And I see
it in others too. As art therapist and Durham Art Star Martha Dyer said to
me last week, “We
are truly at a great moment in time here in Durham.”
There is a creative river flowing through
this town right now, because of the amazing individuals that make up our community.
So many people are making magic
in so many ways—through music,
art, gardens, poetry, philanthropy, food, neighborhoods, events, festivals,
volunteerism, activism, and on and on.
I’ve noticed it and you might have too—and
we think the New York
Times might
have picked up on it as well. There’s going to
be an article in the Sunday New York Times Travel section on June 14 about
our area, including information about us truly, The
Scrap Exchange. (The reporter came in a few weeks ago for a
visit and loved the store.)
We can’t wait to see how it turns out!
In the words of Beaver Queen Pageant emcee John
Parton to one of the contestants on Saturday,
“Thank you for all of your gifts.”

our spring series of Artist's Classes. We offer a variety of
