Greetings from Our Director

Dear Friends,

Last month, I took a road trip with my father, travelling from North Carolina to Michigan in a 1969 Ford Falcon Sport Coupe to attend the national convention of the Falcon Club of America. It was a heartwarming sight to see more than 300 Ford Falcons, Coupes, and Sprints, together in one place, restored to their full glory.

While in Deroit, I took the opportunity to visit the amazing Heidelberg Project as well as the wonderful Henry Ford Museum. And I went on a little busman’s holiday, taking side trips to two of Michigan’s creative reuse centers: The Scrap Box in Ann Arbor and Art & Scraps on the east side of Detroit.

I’ve been to only a few creative reuse centers in my life—The Scrap Exchange (of course), Urban Ore in Berkeley, Materials for the Arts in New York City (where I used to work), and now these two in Michigan—but one of my dreams is to visit all of them. There are only about 44 creative reuse centers in 13 states so that feels like a realistic goal.

While I work out the details of the Great American Reuse Center Tour (anyone know a benefactor who might want to fund that trip?), I’m looking forward to getting together with industry folk at the ReuseConex, an upcoming conference organized by the Reuse Alliance. The conference will be held October 18 – 20 at the North Raleigh Hilton and is shaping up to be quite an event. Check out the website for complete details, and be sure to pass along the information to anyone you think might be interested.

And I have to say that my visits to the reuse centers in Michigan left me feeling pretty good about what we’ve been able to accomplish here at The Scrap Exchange. The biggest difference between what they have going on and what’s happening here? We have YOU!

We have an incredible community, with lots of artists and other creative and concious folks, both those who work here and those who shop, sell, exhibit, and visit here, adding to the cultural juice and making things happen. We’re open seven days a week (both of the centers in Michigan had much more limited hours), we support folks in their efforts to buy local, and we have an Artist’s Marketplace and gallery showing some of the great work people around here are doing.

I could go on and on about all the great things here, but instead I’ll invite you to come out and see for yourself.

This week is the opening of a not-to-be-missed gallery show—Safe Passage Guatemala: Fotografia desde la zona 3, an exhibit of photographs taken by students at Safe Passage, a nonprofit that works to provide safe alternatives for children living around and working in the Guatemala City garbage dump. The show will present photographs taken by the children, along with jewelry made by some of the mothers involved with Safe Passage. Photos and jewelry will be for sale, with proceeds benefitting Safe Passage program participants. Please see the In the Gallery section for complete details.

So come on out to the opening on Friday, August 20, from 6 to 9pm and be sure to check out some of the other Third Friday events going on around town. As usual, we’ll have snacks and drinks, including PBR provided by our friends at Pabst Blue Ribbon, along with art-making and the usual great stuff on display and for sale in our store.

Hope to see you soon!

With love and gratitude,

Ann May Woodward

New Short Documentary Featuring The Scrap Exchange!

The support we receive from the community to help spread the word about our mission is simply amazing!

Here’s a link to a short documentary about The Scrap Exchange that was produced this summer through the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The film was created by students in the Summer 2010 Documentary Video Institute program.

We thank them for providing such a vivid and colorful profile of The Scrap Exchange! And we encourage you to view other documentaries produced by CDS students, available at Duke University on Demand.

Safe Passage Guatemala: Fotografia desde la zona 3

August 20th - September 11th
Opening Reception: Friday August 20 from 6-9 pm

Safe Passage Guatemala: Fotografia desde la zona 3, an exhibit of photographs taken by students at Safe Passage, will open at The Scrap Exchange on Friday, August 20. Safe Passage is a nonprofit organization working to provide a safe alternative for children living around and working in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Eight Guatemalan students have been learning basic photography techniques and have taken pictures of many vivid aspects in and around their lives. The photographs will be for sale, and proceeds will benefit the Safe Passage photography club so they can continue taking pictures! The exhibit will also feature wonderful handmade jewelry fabricated by a group of mothers from Safe Passage. The recycled paper jewelry is for sale and proceeds benefit the mothers, who are part of the Adult Literacy Program.

The Scrap Exchange/Safe Passage exhibit grew out of a trip to Guatemala by Durham artists Bryant Holsenbeck, Julia Gartrell and Bonnie Wright who taught a Scrap Exchange-style art workshop there earlier in the summer. They worked closely  with Safe Passage Art Program Director (and Durhamite) Carlyn Wright-Eakes, who has worked tirelessly to bring art to the children.

The opening reception will be held on Friday August 20 from 6 to 9 pm. The opening will include beverages, snacks and free art-making in our Make and Take room.
