Greetings from Our Director

Greetings January 2012!

Dear Friends,

Thank you for all of your wonderful support in 2011—from board to staff to community volunteers to donors, we are truly grateful. It was quite a year for us, moving and then moving again, and finally landing in a space that we feel very much at home in. In the few short months we've been here, the 22,000 square feet of space we occupy has seen events and programming ranging from the BrewDurham Homebrew Festival to SmashFest to a Swap-O-Rama Rama to our regular Third Friday openings with food, music, and fun. We've started a design center, increased our workshop space to accommodate up to 60 students working simultaneously, and are drawing more visitors than ever, every day of the week. And we're just starting to get settled.

In 2012, look for expanded store hours, new programming, exciting new features (like a woodshop!), and more classes, to name but a few of the things we have in the works.

For a full list of upcoming classes and DIY open studios, keep reading. And then sign up, show up, and start making things! (One that's coming up soon is the open studio I'll be hosting on Friday, February 17 from 6 to 9 pm in the Design Center—stop by to alter a sweater or make a hat or scarf from an old sweater, $5 gets you in the door -- five dolla no holla. You can bring a sweater of your own that you'd like to deconstruct or use one of ours. All ages welcome!)

And this week of course is Third Friday!

We're excited to host our inaugural 2012 Green Gallery exhibit Xiucutil: The Origin of Beautiful Species, featuring paintings and burned images on discarded wood by Joe McDonough. Come on out to the opening on Friday, January 20 from 6 to 9pm, for the usual food and drink, music, and art. (And if you're interested in joining our Gallery Committee, to help select shows and make sure everything goes off without a hitch, just let us know!)

Thank you again for such a dedicated community, we look forward to serving you for another exciting year, and for many years to come.

With gratitude and love,

Ann May Woodward
Executive Director

Used Printer Ink Cartridges Wanted!

Don’t throw away your used or discontinued printer ink cartridges ~ bring them to us!

The Scrap Exchange is resuming a used printer ink cartridge collection program as part of our increased-capacity fundraising campaign. We’ve placed a barrel at the front of the store near the cash register for you to drop your cartridges into.

Your donation of ink cartridges is yet one more easy way you can keep discarded materials out of the landfill and help The Scrap Exchange raise much needed funding.

Please pass this information on to your friends, neighbors and local businesses!

Next Month’s Show

Leaving Liberty
Works created by Daniel Bagnell using materials in (and rescued from) the Liberty Warehouse

February 17 - March 10
Opening Reception: Friday, February 17 from 6-9 pm

Artist Daniel Bagnell has been the collections coordinator and warehouse manager at The Scrap Exchange for over 5 years.  This show will feature work created in the old Scrap Exchange warehouse space made entirely from odds and ends gathered there over the past five years (prior to the collapse of the roof in May 2011).  From readymades to kinetic sculpture to collections of unexpected like objects, the former Scrap warehouse has inspired an infinite variety of aesthetic assemblage and visual delights. Come and see what all those scraps were up to while nobody was looking...

Check out more of Daniel's work on his Tumblr page.
