Scrap Quilts: Creative Reuse Across Generations
Scrap quilts are a quintessential example of creative reuse in America
over the last century and a half. But what happens to these quilts when
they become too worn to use, or to those that were never finished in the
first place?
See how Ruth Warren uses old, tattered, and unfinished scrap quilt
pieces from generations past in new creations.
Ruth will also share her collection of vintage newspaper-backed quilt
blocks -- small pieces of folk art that capture history and creative
reuse together. Find out what was happening in Durham in the 1950's by
reading the back of a quilt block!
Opening reception Friday, August 21 from 6 to 9pm.
September 18– October 10
“Art from the Found World”:
an exhibition of work by Walt Vonschonfeld
This exhibition features detritus from
our manufacturing culture and found objects encountered by the artist in his
travels. The items are used individually and in assemblage to create both
flat and
three dimensional
works that please the senses and defy gravity.
The dynamics of the work are envisioned configurations and compilations resulting
in artwork that is not always permanent.
October 16 – January 5, 2010

Holiday Party and Iron Crafter Competition!
December 18
Iron Crafter Poster
You’ve probably heard of Iron
Chef, the Japanese
cooking show where chefs are given a few specific ingredients and asked
to make a meal
out of them,? Well, we’ve taken that idea and added a Scrap twist —
what
can you make out of a bag of materials from The Scrap Exchange?
We’re hosting our first ever Iron
Crafter competition
on December 18, with categories for youth (under 18), adult (18
and up), professionals (professional artists and designers),
and board and staff.
Each contestant will be given a bag of materials
and asked to make whatever
they can think of. A panel of judges will determine which item
wins the prize.
We can’t wait to see
what people come up with!
To be a contestant, please submit your
name at the store or send an email to with
your name, competition category, phone number and/or email address. We
will select names randomly
and notify contestants in early December.
Please note that you must attend
the competition in person; all craft items must be made on site in the time
allowed.
As usual, we’ll have drinks
and snacks and other fun things (including a Cake
Walk!)
, so be sure to stop by.
